Refugee aid at KIT

... an exemplary sign of humanitarian commitment.
From November 2014 to June 2016 - at a time when the number of people fleeing to Germany had reached its peak - KIT employees and students jointly committed themselves to refugees. In two emergency shelters set up at the East and North Campuses, respectively, for up to 1,700 people, they set a sign of humanity to improve the humanitarian situation of the refugees housed here.
The services offered by KIT Refugee Aid ranged from meeting and sports activities to German lessons, childcare, and interpreting.

We continued our involvement in the "Schröcker Tor" shelter. In this
container village in Leopoldshafen, right next to the North Campus on the edge of the forest, a bicycle repair shop had been established for several years. On Sundays, residents and activists repaired bicycles together.

Working for and with the refugees was a formative, valuable experience, as was getting to know and doing things together with like-minded colleagues and students across age boundaries, faculties, functions and origins. The integration of refugees into our German society and, just as importantly, the integration of our German neighbors into a country where refugees are welcome, is a topic we will continue to pursue.

If you have any questions about opportunities to volunteer for refugees in Karlsruhe, please contact Flüchtlingshilfe Karlsruhe e. V. (to which KIT Refugee Aid also belongs).
If you have any questions about the integration of refugees in studies / training at KIT, there is an integration coordinator.

Once again, thank you very much for the countless hours of help for the refugees and the welcoming culture of KIT !!!
